Why Was The Internet Originally Created
Internet has become an integral part of the communication world. Internet has transformed the way we used to live, we used to communicate, we used to do business, and even the way we used to travel. But does the internet really doing what it was created for? To give an answer we are presenting here a brief background of the events which led to the creation of the internet.
Cold War – The Beginning
During 1950s when the cold war was at its height, the US Department of Defense (DoD) started looking for a way to build a better and stronger military network which could be trusted even during the worst conditions of War. The dream was to build a network which could survive even the Nuclear War. The reason behind this need was the unreliability of the telephony military network. As the telephone network consists of multiple telephone connected with one switching office. That local switching office is then connected to the national level switching offices (upper tier). In such a network if only one switching offices gets destroyed all the connections will be failed. Since the telephone networks are the back bone of the communication industry in any country so they were considered highly vulnerable to enemy attacks during the wars. The contract was awarded to RAND to design a more reliable network. One of the employees of RAND, Paul Baran presented a solution in which he proposed to build a packet-switched network in which each router had its own host. The idea was liked by DoD and AT&T got the task to implement the design. AT&T refused to implement it claiming that the design was impossible to build. An idea was killed!
Space War – Us Vs Soviet Union
When the Soviet Union beat US in the space war by launching first artificial satellite, the US president wanted to know who was sleeping in his country’s research centers. Finally, he decided to make a new research organization which would work independently from Pentagon. The organization was named ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency).
ARPA and ARPANET
ARPA (which was later renamed DARPA, where D stands for Defense) started working on finding a solution for a better command-and-control system. ARPA director Larry Roberts asked the grad students and researchers to find a design solution and one of the researchers Wesley Clark proposed a design which was quite similar to what Baran presented. ARPA bought his idea and gave the contract to BBN, a consulting firm, for implementation. BBN implemented the hardware and software part and formed a network of four computers which was called ARPANET. ARPANET was the first form of internet. Soon, the ARPANET grew tremendously and spanned over entire USA.
So, the internet was created with the intention to build a better military network which could survive even nuclear war.
ARPANET and packet switching
This Sunday in the Missoulian: more on ARPANET and packet switching. And in Mac Q and A: Converting video from a DVD for editing in iMovie. ARPANET developed the concept of packet switching, the basis of the most basic form.
ARPAnet - The First Internet
The model-T of the information highway - ARPANET was the first Internet.
Arpanet - Wireless Internet
A partir de esta base nace ARPANET, cuyo primer enlace se estableció entre las universidades de Stanford y UCLA con el envío de su primer mensaje el 29 de Octubre de 1969.
