Chess is one of the oldest games in the human history. It was originated in India in the Gupta Era. The Indian merchants took this game with them to Europe. In India, Chess was named Shatranj (a Persian name), in Spain it was called as ‘ajedrez’, in Portuguese as ‘zadrez’, and in Greece as ‘zatrikion’, but in rest of the Europe it was rendered as ‘check’ or ‘chess’.
Chess was equally popular in these regions and great development was made in defining the rules of the game during the early era of the history of this game. In Europe, new rules were made which gave vital importance to the queen and hence the game was sometimes named as ‘Queen’s Chess’ and ‘Mad Queen Chess’.
Theories were written which described how to play the game and these theories appeared as early as 15th century. In 19th century the game became even more popular and great development was made. Chess clubs, chess bars were made and books were written.
The game soon became a sport and match between the cities were played often. First ever match was being played between London Chess Club and Edinburgh Chess Club in 1824 and was won by London Chess Club.
The first chess tournament winner was a German named Adolf Anderssen.
