When Did The Internet Begin

The first form of internet was invented as early as 1967. Since then a lot of innovation and technological changes had been made in the internet and what has emerged as a consequence of these innovation is the wonderful, amazing network of networks, connecting people world wide and making the knowledge universal.

When did the internet really begin? To answer the question let’s have look into the history of internet and its evolution.

how did the internet beginThe 1950s
The story has its origin in the Cold War. When the war was at its height the US Department of Defense felt the need of a better military communication system. The Pentagon assigned the task to RAND to find a solution for such a network. The dream was to build a network which could be relied upon even in the nuclear war. The then existing network was made of nodes connected in such a way that if even one node or the connection between on single connection gets damaged the whole network would collapse. So, the idea was to build a network which could work even if some or more connections stop working. RAND employee Paul Baran came up with the idea of a packet-switched network. The idea got the approval of Pentagon and a contract was awarded to AT&T to build the network. AT&T refused clearly claiming that the network is impossible to build.

the internet startedYears went by and then came the ARPA (Advance Research Projects Agency) which was an independent research organization made by the US president Eisenhower. ARPA director assigned the task to find a design for a better command-and-control system to researchers and graduate students. Wesley Clark, a researcher came up with the idea of building a subnet in which each router would have its own router. The idea was similar to Paul Baran’s idea. ARPA approved the idea and BBN, a consulting firm, was awarded the contract to build this network. BBN built this network with 56kbps and four computers at four different institutes. That was the very first (and very simple) form of the internet we are using today. So, looking back at the history one may say that internet began as early as 1970s.

ARPA-E’ – what it really stands for
The indifference and anonymity around ARPA-E says something very clear about the energy-and-environment community – specifically, its members are not serious about taking steps towards large-scale investment in clean energy technology.

ARPA-E Receives
The Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) of the US Department of Energy (DOE) has received approximately 3500 submissions for the $150 million available as part of its first Funding Opportunity Announcement.
