What Decade Did The Internet Start
What decade did the Internet start? To find an answer let’s have a look at the history of the Internet.
The History of Internet – 1950s -1960s
The origin of the Internet lies in the Cold War. During the height of the Cold War, the US Department of Defense decided to build a military network which could survive even the toughest conditions of war. Around 1960s, the DoD awarded a contract to RAND to develop a design of such a network. One of the employees of RAND, Paul Baran, came up with a solution. His idea was to build a packet-switched network (which is the principle functioning rule behind the internet). The DoD liked his idea and asked AT&T to implement the design proposed by Paul Baran. AT&T refused, claiming that the design was impossible to implement. The idea was killed!
Let’s go back a little. In 1957, first artificial satellite was launched by Soviet Union. It was a big hit on the United Sates, so the American President Eisenhower enquired the Pentagon
about the research grants and progresses. Finally, he decided to make one, single research organization which would individually work to find solutions for military related technological problems. The organization was named ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency). That’s when the real development on the invention of Internet was started. ARPA immediately started working on finding a design solution for a better command-and-control network. One researcher Wesley Clark suggested a design solution of a packet-switched network in which each host would have its own router. The director of ARPA, Larry Roberts, bought the idea of Wesley and a contract was awarded to BBN in 1967 to implement this subnet. BBN implemented subnet connecting four network nodes with each other using 56kbps transmission lines. This network was the very first form of Internet. Huge development was made during 1970s and 1980s. But the decade of 70s could be the answer to our initial question: What decade did the Internet start?
