Yes, that’s true! With the ever-increasing usage of Internet, this network of networks has truly become the nervous system of our mother earth. Today we are more connected with each other than we could even imagine some years ago! Our world has become a global village now, and Internet is the central square of this village. Internet is more complex than we actually think.  Millions of machines are interconnected to each other with the help of Internet and the growth of this network ahs no signs to stop. The Internet is getting bigger everyday and its expansion has no limits! But exactly how many computers are connected to the Internet? This is an interesting yet difficult question to answer, as there’s no hard and fast rule to count the number of machines getting connected to the Internet.

The only information we can get about the number of computer connected to the Internet is through the IP addresses registered up till now.   But before that, let’s try to understand the logic of IP addresses:

IP Address and its Significance
A simple statement to start with:
"A name indicates what we seek. An address indicates where it is. A route indicates how to get there."

So, basically an IP address is the location of a computer and is assigned whenever a computer gets connected to the Internet. IP Addresses are like the street address that we use to reach someone’s home. For instance: Server computers being used to store the databse of Google are assigned a specific IP address. When a user connects to the internet he is assigned a unique IP address. When the user opens the Google webpage, data messages travel from the Google computers to the user’s computer. Naturally, these data messages need some address for routing and this address is the IP address of the user. This alone shows the significance of an IP address.

Coming back to our first question, the IP addresses, if counted, would give information about those computers which are connected to the internet and are in ‘online’ status. Currently, IPv4 is being used as an address block for the IP address allocation. There are roughly 4.29 billion addresses in this block. It is estimated that this block will be exhausted in 2011, meaning that by 2011 4.29 billion computers will be connected to the internet. How many computers are connected right now? The answer can never be generated as the number varies. A rough estimate shows 605.6 million comoputers are connected to the Internet World wide.
