How Many Computer Make Up The Internet Today
Internet – The Network of Networks, a huge web which has connected almost every person of planet earth with each other with its infinite strings. But are they really infinite or can we count them in numbers? Here, in this article, we are trying to get deeper into this network of networks to find out just how many computer machines are making up the internet today.
Count ‘em with their IP addresses
One way, in fact, the only way to count the computer machines which make the internet is to count the IP addresses. Why? Because every computer when gets connected to the internet is allocated a unique IP address for identification. This IP address makes it differentiable from other computers connected to the internet. When a user connects its computer to the internet an IP address is assigned to his computer and making the computer able to enter the internet world. Once allocated an IP address, that computer becomes a part of the internet. So, the internet is made up of only those computers which are ONLINE and posses a unique IP Address. Counting the number of computers which makes up the internet seems pretty easy and simple from this theory, but sadly, it’s not that easy. It is rather complicated and one should not be surprised if we say that the number of computers making up the internet can never be found. Because:
1. LANs (Local Area Networks), such as in academic insititutes, public libraries, museums, or small offices are consisted of multiple computers which are connected with each other to make a local network and only one ‘server’ computer is connected with the internet to get all these computers connected to the internet. The problem lies in the fact that in such a case the IP address is allocated to the server computer only and no IP is allocated to other computers in the LAN. Now apparently what seems one single computer is actually a network of multiple computers connected to the inetrnet. Since LANs are everywhere so by merely looking at the number of consumed IP addresses one cannot tell the correct number of computers which make up the internet.
2. Many households and mobiles have got the technology to get connected with the internet. Mostly, to save the cost of internet access, users connect their devices through bluetooth, infrared, or data cable witht the computer and access the internet through computer. Multiple devices can be attached to one comoputer to get internet access. The same problem undertakes this situation as well – one IP address is connection multiple devices to the internet.
So, it is the proven fact that an absolute number of computers making up the internet can never be calculated, however, one can make an estimate by looking at the number of consumed IP addresses. Currently Ipv$ system is in use and is almost near to exhaustion. The number of unique IP addresses in this system is 4,294,967,296. So, this may be the number of computers making up the internet, or may be not!
